Between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, 40 African American churches were constructed in Montgomery County. In these cornerstones of their communities, generations of black families created their own spiritual, social and educational opportunities.

This 60-minute documentary video, produced by Heritage Montgomery, features five of these historic church communities, including reminiscences by church elders whose words explain how these communities developed, illustrate life in segregated times, and convey their pride in the accomplishments of their ancestors. The music and choirs associated with each featured church, an integral piece of the African American experience, play a part in this project and their performances are highlighted.
