Franklin H. Karn
built this house in 1937 for his daughter Mildred and her fiancé,
Wendell Turner. Mildred had seen a similar one which she liked in
Washington, D.C. Period features, combined with clean modern lines,
reflect Rockville's growing sophistication as it evolved from a
small county seat to a more urban community.
The
dark brick house has distinct Tudor features: jutting gables, stone
quoining around the entry, and an arched brick garden entry. Over
the front door is a limestone lintel, carved by stone masons into a
shell and foliage pattern. With interior mouldings of chestnut wood,
this house must have made quite a stunning wedding gift
Karn was a custom
builder. In addition to this house, he built 115, 119, and 18 Forest
Avenue and other homes and schools in the Rockville area. His son
and grandson later joined the business. The Karns lived at "The
Maples," a farm on Great Falls Road, now Rose Hill Falls
subdivision. From 1934-38, Karn served as a Montgomery County
Commissioner.
The Turners remained
in the three-bedroom house until 1958. Current owners are Hal and
Maggi Osgood.
